The dike is a long strip of land extending five miles out into Galveston Bay. When the wind is blowing from the south or southeast the dike creates an area of flat water north of it. This is good for speed sailing. The beach is sandy. Probably not good for beginners who would get blown too far offshore towards the ship channel. Ships pass nearby and may leave a slow, rolling wake. Not sure of the state of the Dike after the recent hurricane.
